Thrush in Babies - Causes and Prevention

 

The issue of thrush is relatively common in babies, and it can be quite discomforting for a child, especially when the baby is feeding or sucking. If you think your baby has thrush, then there is nothing to worry about as such since this problem is treatable. As a mother, you can also take certain steps to prevent it. 

So, let's look at the issue of thrush in babies mouth in a little more detail.  

What Exactly Is Thrush? 

In layman's terms, thrush is a yeast infection in babies. It is a fungal infection caused by the yeast known as Candida albicans. Candida is normal in human beings, and it does not cause any issues in most cases, but sometimes its growth can get out of hand, which is when it becomes troublesome. One of the major causes for its extra growth is a weak immune system that cannot stop it from getting out of hand. 

How to Tell If It Is Thrush? 

Thrush in babies is diagnosed by doctors, but there are still certain signs that might give you an idea if your little one has thrush or not. A simple peek into your baby’s mouth can tell you if the baby has thrush. Below are some common thrush symptoms. 

• White sores on the tongue. 

• White sores in the mouth. 

• Redness in the mouth. 

• Diaper rashes.  

• Cranky Baby. 

Thrush Prevention 

Clean Bottle – If you give your baby formula milk through a bottle, make sure that the bottle, the ring, and the nipple are absolutely clean. 

Clean Toys – Anything that your baby puts in his mouth, like toys and pacifiers, etc., should be clean too. 

Frequent Diaper Changes – Change your little one’s diaper frequently so that the yeast does not cause any diaper rash. 

Wash Your Hands – Make sure that you wash your hands thoroughly. 

Dry Breast Pads – If you use breast pads, ensure that they are dry because if they have moisture, there is a chance that will cause thrush.
